Makar Sankrant why it is imp. compared to 22 Dec.
Recently we celebrated Makar Sankrant. We all know that this is the day when the sun enters the tropic of capricorn as viewed from earth and the days start getting longer than the nights (as viewed from northern hemisphere). But there is more significance to it.
Actually the days have already started getting longer right from 23rd December. So that is not the significant point on Makar Sankrant which is 15th Jan. But the interesting point is How does the day become longer?
There are two ways -- Either sunrise time has to get earlier or sunset time has to get later.
So if you see the Panchang (the Almanac) you will find that the sunset time start later right from 23rd Dec. But the sunrise time has not yet moved to early timings. The sun -- like a naughty child, continues to rise later than when it did on the previous day. This happens till 11th or 12 Jan. Then the sunrise time remains steady for a day or two as if the sun is still thinking if it can continue to remain naughty and lazy. Then it decides and from 15th it starts rising earlier each day. The sun will keep on rising earlier throughout the months of Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr, May, Jun, till around 15th Jul, on which day it enters the tropic of Cancer and again starts to rise later each new day.
So in our Hindu calender we give more importance to Makar Sankrant and enjoy the early rising sun.
